The Grand Marian Procession is an annual religious event held in Intramuros, Manila where several carrozas bearing the image of the Virgin Mary meanders along the cobbled streets of the walled former citadel. This year, there were more than 80 such images from around the country and I was there to capture some images.

At first, I didn’t have much idea what to do but eventually decided to do a series of portraits of devotees infront of their marian image. I did encounter some problems since I was using an 80mm lens equivalent. Because of this focal length, most of the time, I didn’t have much space to go further at the back because of the crowds in an area where these images were waiting for their turn to move.

Well, not so many images but above are some of the portrait studies I did.

Rear view mirror of a jeepney

While going south, this rear view mirror got my attention especially with the Christ sticker. Most dashboards of jeepneys are amply decorated and most of the time, images or, in this case, religious stickers often compete with trinkets.

Quiapo Church devotees venerate the image of the Black Nazarene

Every Friday, devotees to the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno flock to Quiapo Church to hear mass, pray and venerate the said to be miraculous image. Originally brought by the Augustinian Recollects in 1606 from Mexico, the icon supposedly got it’s black color during a fire that raged in the boat while at sea. It was housed in the Recollect convent in Intramuros and in the 18th century, was transferred to the then church in Quiapo. This event, called the translacion, is commemorated every 9 January where hundreds of thousands, predominantly male devotees, converge.

The Catholic mass goes to the mall to serve the spiritual needs of parishioners.

In major malls like SM and Ayala, and to some extent, some smaller ones, around the country, the Catholic mass has been performed every Sunday or in some cases, Saturday for the anticipated mass. It seems, with more and more people spending time at these public places, the church is also catching up with the times.
