Good Friday night in Carcar

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Our Good Friday trip in southeastern Cebu was capped with the procession in Carcar where we waited primarily for the gilded and huge carroza of the Santo Intierro. And it was a spectacle.

Men accelerate to pull the carroza of the Santo Intierro as it goes up the hill to the church.

The people start to get the flowers of the carroza as it stops infront of the church.

Good Friday in Argao

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Good Friday is the highlight of the Holy Week and because of these, people come in droves to churches. Argao in Cebu is no exception. Before the Good Friday night procession, there are lots of activities inside the church starting with the via crucis/visita iglesia in the morning and afternoon, the Good Friday mass and finally, the kissing of the cross where many people line up.

San Pedro de Argao

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Last Holy Week, I was spending some time in Argao to document some lenten practices. In this southeastern town in the province of Cebu, there are still several antique ivory processional images that are brought out during this important religious event.

On Holy Tuesday, the antique ivory image of San Pedro is taken out to be dressed for the procession on Holy Wednesday. This icon is part of a set of ivory images that the church got, probably in the 18th or 19th century and were assigned to the prominent families of the town as caretakers.

My thanks to Leslie Obiso for assisting me.

On Holy Tuesday, the image is taken from it's cabinet and dressed for the Holy Wednesday procession. Leslie took charge of this activity.

I was wide eyed at the Minor Basilica of San Sebastian

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I’ve always been intrigued with the all steel church of the Minor Basilica of San Sebastian. Thanx to Tina Paterno, who will be heading a restoration project of this impressive edifice, I was able to appreciate further and take preliminary shots of the interior for a future feature in simbahan.net and to help Tina with her advocacy/project.

I can’t help but be wide eyed at the fan vaulting, the neo gothic details of this church but also disheartened at deterioration of the iron cladding that is quite prominent in the interior. These are just a few of the images I took and will be shooting the basilica by next week. Stay tuned.

About the images, I prefer to do this in black and white to focus more on the architectural details than be distracted by the colors and lights.

The faithful attending the Good Friday activities just before the procession

Amidst historic buildings built in the 19th century, the faithful spill over to the open courtyard and outside spaces during the solemn Good Friday mass, one of the most important activities of Semana Santa (Holy Week).
