The 'Identity Sucks!' book

Finally! My awaited Identity Sucks! book arrived and I was so excited to unwrap it from its parcel and shrink wrap. Even opened it infront of my mother!

While my photo of Franklin, submitted for the project with WorldIdentityLab, was expected, I was rather surprised that they included the Skype interview they did with me and four other contributors. Of course, these are transcribed including screencaps.

The book has 108 contributions from 78 photographers coming from 26 different countries of which I was the lone Philippine entry. It is also available for sale via the worldidentitylab.net.

This is the one that I’ve been waiting for!

Finally, my copy of the January 2011 issue of GEO Magazine, a German language publication said to be similar to the National Geographic Magazine, has arrived! In their feature of goddesses, with a special focus on the Blessed Virgin Mary and Guan Yin, they’ve included one of my images that is part of my La Naval de Manila work.

And, oh boy, a double page spread at that!

Cover of the latest Oct-Nov issue

The October – November issue of Bluprint Magazine is in bookstores and magazine stands and this issue, with the theme Remembrance and Design, features two articles that I’ve shot plus one image of the Liwasang Bonifacio monument in Manila. This is my second issue with them, the first being the June 2010 issue that featured San Sebastian Minor Basilica.

The first article features the Bahay Nakpil-Bautista heritage house, now a museum, near Hidalgo St., Quiapo, Manila which I do like very much for its kind of fusion architecture: the traditional bahay na bato and Viennese Secessionist styles. The latter was incorporated when the original owner was gifted with furniture in the said style.

There’s a unity in the architecture with details of the furniture echoed in many parts of the house, typically, geometric and near abstract vegetal forms. Wide open spaces and high ceilings make this a very comfortable home apt for the natural weather and temperature of Manila before the advent of airconditioning.

Stories in Stone by Jennifer Cristobal. I'm a co-photographer

The second article, Stories in Stone, again by Jennifer Cristobal. I was supposed to shoot the full article in both Chinese and La Loma cemeteries but a problem that arose when we went to the latter prevented me from doing it. I did enjoy shooting the former with its very interesting art deco architecture.

After this issue, I’m looking forward to the December publication of two articles for Sta. Maria Church in Ilocos, a UNESCO World Site as well as the Metropolitan Theater in Manila. I did the photography for these two.

The "Identity Sucks" book where my work is one of the featured images

Franklin

My black and white environmental portrait of my cousin, Franklin, is included in World Identity Lab’s Identity Sucks project and was off to press last 5 October!

To look back, I was invited by Christian Schlager to contribute and, until its close, I am the lone Philippine entry. When they did a video interview on identity, I was one of five selected.

Now, I’m awaiting this interesting book with contributions from 108 photographers from 78 countries. It should be on its way by post when its finished publication.
