Images of God: Photography in Southeast Asia
A public lecture organised in conjunction with Abbas, 45 Years in Photography

With all the major faiths having an active presence in Southeast Asia, it is only natural that photographers in this region address the subject of religion in their works. And they do so with different approaches and motivations. A sense of discovery in relation to their personal faith informs the works of Ng Swan Ti in Catholicism in Indonesia (2000–2005) and Rahman Roslan in Halal (2008– present). Over in Thailand, Michael Shaowanasai and Manit Sriwanichpoom deconstruct the iconography of Buddhism in Portrait of a Man in Habits (2000) and Masters (2009) respectively. Kamthorn Paowattanasuk looks at the “consumption” of religion in his documentation of strange temple structures in Holly Alloy (2006– present). Estan Cabigas draws a connection between Philippine Catholicism and the rise of malling culture in The New Cathedrals (2010-present). Malaysian provocateur Liew Kung Yu responds to the erosion of Chinese culture in his photo montage Hungry Ghost Festival, Penang (1995). Finally, in Mohammed and Me (2005), Paul Kadarisman questions the media’s portrayal of Indonesia as a “dangerous” destination in the aftermath of the Bali and Jakarta bombings. In this talk, speaker Zhuang Wubin will examine the above works in greater detail.

Speaker’s Biography
Zhuang Wubin (b. 1978; Singapore) uses photography to understand the cultures and histories of the Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. His third photographic monograph Chinese Muslims in Indonesia is published by Select Books and supported by Lee Foundation. He is also a curator and researcher specialising in contemporary photographic practices in Southeast Asia. In addition, he is a correspondent curator of the Southeast Asian section of Photoquai 2011 at the Musée du quai Branly. Recent essays he wrote includes “Politics and Identity: Contemporary Photography in Thailand,” Trans Asia Photography Review, 2011 and “New Malaysian Documentary Photography,” Art Monthly Australia, May 2011.

Crimson Hot, my first article in Bluprint Magazine’s April issue

Page spread of my first article. I also did the photography

Magazine cover

My first article for BluPrint magazine’s April 2011 issue is now out in bookstores and magazine stands!

A few months ago, I was asked to photograph this beautiful resort in Mactan Island, Cebu but eventually, I was asked to write the article too. With trepidation, I accepted. I should confess, I don’t have a background in architecture except that I do architectural photography with some books credited to me and articles too in this magazine. But write?

Okay, I was a bit anxious at first but eventually, I was able to assemble a couple of paragraphs, almost a thousand word article. I did some research, read BluPrint’s writing style and the result? My editor, Judith Torres emailed:

First pass… I like it.

Whew! It got only a few edits and some minor clarifications. And I was greatly relieved. Check the magazine out. This is also my first assignment to do architectural shots of a modern structure (I focus on heritage buildings like Filipino baroque churches and houses). More please.

Bluprint contributor page for the April 2011 issue

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

I’m quite excited to get BluPrint’s Sun and Water Issue (April 2011, now available in newstands) as this is my first time to write on design and architecture. Well, below is just a teaser.

A former telecoms engineer, Estan Cabigas is a freelance photographer and blogger. He specializes in travel, architecture and documentary photography, and was principal photographer for two coffee table books on Philippine heritage church architecture. For this issue, Estan takes us to one of Mactan’s high end beach resorts — this time we not only see his stunning photographs but we hear what he has to say too.

The article Flight, written by Flaudette May Datuin includes two of my photos which is part of my ongoing photo project, Looking for Mr. Vhoy. This is also my proposal which made it to the Nothing to Declare International Contemporary Art Exhibition which will happen in Manila on November 2011 – January 2012. From the 100 proposals from different countries, 40 were selected of which there are eight of us from the Philippines.

I will be posting soon about my ongoing documentary project here.

I just received my copy of artlink and the final layout is different from this one. All three images that I submitted made it to print.

My Sta. Maria Church in Bluprint Vol 1 2011 issue

Page spread which feature my Sta. Maria work

The latest issue's cover

In the latest Bluprint Magazine, Vol 1 2011, the Design Sourcebook, my photos of the baroque Church in Sta. Maria Ilocos Sur, a World Heritage Site, are featured. The story, is part of the Ilocos visita iglesia that also includes the churches in Vigan, Paoay, Sarrat and Bantay. My images were taken in 2005, when I went to Ilocos with a friend for some vacation and we dropped by this place.

Sta. Maria Church is one of four declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site that also includes Paoay in Ilocos Norte, San Agustin in Manila and Miag-ao in Iloilo. This is also the only church in the group that is located atop a hill, doubling as a lookout. Its convento is unique as it is directly infront of the structure.

The magazine is currently available in newstands.
