Gagamboys work is presented as a photo story in this exhibit

My flagellant photo entitled "Nature Fashion" is included in the exhibition

Asian News in Pictures is an exhibition of the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University as part of its 10th anniversary.

The exhibit showcases the diversity of issues confronting Asia and are among the best single and photo stories in the portfolios submitted by students as a final requirement in the Diploma in Photojournalism (DPJ) course.

Here, my Gagamboys work (also published in Asian Currents magazine) and flagellant photo entitled Nature Fashion, part of my A Ritual of Faith series, is included. The exhibit is open to the public from 7 – 30 June 2010 at the MVP Center for Student Leadership (formerly Colayco Hall), Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City, Metro Manila.

My flagellant photo was wrongly credited to another photojournalist.

One thing that sort of disappointed me when I arrived before the opening of the exhibit was seeing one of my prized images wrongly credited to another photojournalist that I immediately called their attention. As a stop gap measure, they covered it with masking tape.

My work on the Desaparecidos photo story is the lone Philippine entry in the Chobi Mela V International Festival of Photography

The Chobi Mela V catalog hand carried by Shahidul Alam

Finally, my copy of the Chobi Mela V International Festival of Photogaphy catalog is in my hands. Big thanx to Shahidul Alam, Festival Director, who hand carried it and gave it to me last night during the Alumni homecoming of the ACFJ.

I was promised last year that my copy will be mailed but really haven’t gotten it and now this: hardbound, thick and heavy weighted paper featuring the works of the different photographer artists who showed work at the festival interpreting the theme Freedom.

My work, Coping with a Desaparecido, was the lone Philippine entry. Check my other Chobi Mela V posts.

My photo story entitled GAGAMBOYS looks at a summer diversion of spider fighting transformed into a betting game by adults

Cover of the magazine

After being featured in a series of international and local magazines* last May and this month, my work, Gagamboys, is being featured in the Asian Currents, Journal of Works and Studies in Asian Journalism published by the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at the Ateneo de Manila University.

This is the ACFJ’s special 10th Anniversary issue featuring the best student works submitted as a requirement in graduating in the M.A. Journalism (15 articles) and five of the best photo stories in the Diploma in Photojournalism programs that are offered. The variety reflects the diversity of interests and issues confronting today’s Asia. A photo exhibit entitled Asian News in Pictures accompanies this feature.

Gagamboys was my minor portfolio submission for my Diploma inPhotojournalism course and was taken in Bagong Barrio, Caloocan City.

"Underbelly of a Bridge" as featured in Bluprint's Viewfinder

In the same June 2010 issue of Bluprint where my images of San Sebastian Minor Basilica was published including the cover, my image of Marcelo Fernan Bridge also made it to the Viewfinder section. Page scan at the left.

The bridge image was taken at night a few years ago with some friends who were also into Photography. We were at the Mactan side and under the bridge. With a tripod and timer, got several photos showing this beautiful structure.

Bluprint, a locally produced design sourcebook usually features images from photographers and contributors that are mainly architectural. The short write up reads:

Estan Cabigas is a freelance photographer blogger and traveler. He has written/photographed for CNN Go, been featured in National Geographic Magazine, and published two coffee table book on Philippine Church Architecture.

Estan likes to shoot order or chaos in architectural forms. Underbelly of a Bridge was shot with a lot of patience below Marcelo Fernan Bridge between Mactan and Cebu. He maintains six blogs, two winning Best Blog at the Philippine blog Awards (2009), collects beetles, and lives in Makati City.

That’s it.

One of three images that I took published in the running magazine frontRunner

My copy of the latest issue (June 2010) of frontRUNNER Magazine just arrived. It features three of my images that I took of Haide Acuna during the Bataan Death March 102 Ultramarathon last March. The story is about the author/ultramarathoner’s experience during this punishing race co written with her husband and lone support crew, Eugene Cabusao. Check FitandRun.Info for more.
